A stampede of fans hospitalized 15 people before a soccer World Cup warm-up match today between Nigeria and North Korea in Johannesburg, South African police said.

One of them was a police officer who was “seriously wounded” after supporters forced open gates to the Makhulong Stadium in Johannesburg’s Tembisa township this afternoon, according to an e-mailed police statement. A second police official was slightly injured, it said.
“Police members immediately started implementing crowd management measures but the crowd became unruly and pushed against the gates, forcing the gates open on two occasions,” the statement said.
The World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg at the end of this week. Several teams have already arrived and are playing preparation matches in stadiums that are not designated for the tournament. Makhulong is not among World Cup stadiums.
The two teams may have handed out 10,000 tickets outside the stadium, the police statement said.
World soccer’s governing body FIFA said it wished a prompt recovery to those hurt. In a statement, it said the match had no relation with the operational organization of the World Cup, for which FIFA remained “fully confident.”
The governing body said that contrary to some media reports, FIFA had nothing to do with the ticketing of the game, which ended in a 3-1 win for Nigeria.
